big eyes, little mouth

If today were to be a food it would be cotton candy, all sweet and fun and floaty and sticky. I went to Coney Island today for the first time ever, to partake in the sweaty, hipster-y mess that is the Siren Music Festival. It was phenomenal, the bands were awesome (I only payed attention to the Dodos, Beach House, Islands, and Stephen Malkmus & The Jicks to be honest, but still), the weather was HOT, and so were the people.

Other than seeing some FAB FAB bands I also had a few other fun
surprises. As I was just becoming rather infuriated with trying to find a couple friends (a situation that turned into a downright wild goose chase) a rather attractive guy asked to get my photo to use as part of a promotional something-or-another for the movie What We do is Secret, which was quite a pick-me-up. Then as I was walking on the boardwalk with my friends (I finally did find them), Eddie Newton of Stylesightings stopped my friend and I and asked to shoot both of us!

Plus it was just a good day. Here are some things to look at.

p.s. thanks to everyone who recommended solutions to my photo uploading problem, I am much too tired tonight to try the suggestions but they will come to good use shortly.

Many loves to you all!

I'm so plaid

I just realized how exceptionally out of the fashion show loop I have been of late. It used to be that I would spend hours perusing collection after collection- but recently I've been paying much more attention to "real people"-wear (you guys). So when I came to the conclusion just the other day that I absolutely stupendously love plaid I thought I was being all original- well a quick jaunt through a couple magazines, and style.com put me right on that matter. Apparently plaid is going to be big this fall, a trend I fully intend to endorse, though my pocketbook will unfortunately be ruling out buying these:

D&G
I'm not a big fan of D&G, and a lot of looks from this collection were, in my opinion, too overdone- to the point where the integrity and interest of each garment is lost to the larger clash of pattern, color, and shape. But I love these. The last one reminds me of Ukranian pysanky:

Preen
On first glance I didn't really think this collection was all that great (I promise I'm not usually this negative!), but when I looked closer I absolutely fell for it. The colors, textures, and shapes that are used are just bloody brilliant.

Peter Som
I completely adore the creativity of this collection. It's classic, but with a twist, and I would wear every single piece.

And I'll take these as my little black dresses, yes please!

Apologies for not posting yesterday, it was a tiring and hectic day. Much love to you all, thank you all for reading and commenting, this blog has rather become my baby.

edit: I HATE MY BLOGGER ACCOUNT!! Or something like that, every time I preview this post it is about a third of the way as long, because the pictures line up properly (3 in a row, 2 rows of 3 pics), but when I publish it it messes it all up! Also the pictures are un-clickable! Why? If anyone has any suggestions as to solving this problem please do tell!

This and that

First thing's first, I received the brilliante weblog premio from the lovely lovely tea drinking english rose!
Here are the rules of the game:
1) When received, you may post the premio on your blog
2) Link to the blogger you received from
3) Give it to 4 blogs and link to those blogs
4) Leave those 4 blogs a comment telling them they have received the premio

I am giving this award to fashion pirates, paris tarts, it's her factory and sea of shoes.

Secondly, I made cupcakes last night to cheer me up, because I was feeling rather low.

And finally, I am wearing this today, and burying myself in children's books
chain necklace & key necklace made by me
lace/net scarf made by me
sunglasses from st mark's place

Applause, applause life is our cause

I have this funny little habit-whenever I feel like I can't find anything to wear in my closet, I tear through everything I own and invariably end up finding something I never wear and converting it to a skirt. Which subsequently makes me late for whatever I am going to do, but oh well because, I have another skirt!

Here's what I made and wore today:
skull necklace
sunglasses from a vendor on st. marks place
netting skirt worn as a cape made by me
vintage banana republic belt
fake leather/pvc skirt made by me (from an ugly old dress)

Yesterday I pulled on the beloved trousers once again, along with the fringe necklace that I love oh so much (excuse the toilet paper dispenser, I was in the bathroom at work when I took these):
fringe necklace made by me
skull necklace
old navy tank
secondhand trows edited by me
Steve Madden ankle booties

Wrackspurts and Patroni

All I want to do is lie around and read Harry Potter. The passion with which those books seize me is really quite incomparable to anything else in the world. In fact, I just read the seventh one (for the second time) in two days, and now all I can think about is how much I want to be in Harry Potter, and how silly real life is, because I am not a witch and didn't go to Hogwarts. In fact, I started the series when I was ten, and on my eleventh birthday, when I didn't get a letter from any witch's and wizard's school I was absolutely crestfallen.

Perhaps I'm just overly fanciful, but I really do wish such a world would exist, even if I am not immediately part of it. I think, in all reality, that I am drawn to fashion because of this deep streak of fanciful-ness that I have always had. As a kid I loved to play dress up, and was constantly making up stories in my head, in which I was magical, or a
fairy, or some other sort of fantastical adventurer. I have recently realized that I still do this exact thing, only it is to a much more "realistic" degree. Every day when I get dressed I create a character for myself, and when I step into the clothes, I step into who I want to be for the day.

I think also that reading Harry Potter reminds me of that much more beautiful aspect of my person- becoming immersed in his story draws out the longing in me to be something different, something more, someone that believes that anything can happen, and that anything is possible. He brings out the little girl in me, who I so often shut in a closet under the stairs- even if it's only accidental.

And on that very tangental note, here are some pictures that are inspiring me today (especially the first three):

p.s. sorry the photos won't enlarge- I'm not sure what's going on with my blogger account, but lately it's not been uploading photos correctly...anyway if you click on the link you can see the photos their original size on flickr. Much love to you all.

I'm back!

Hello hello! I'm back from my mini hiatus in Detroit, it was relaxing and nice to see family, but it's good to be back with you and with my city.
I've realized recently how much I rely on my fellow bloggers for fashion inspiration. It used to be that I would religiously peruse the pages of my huge collection of magazines to glean ideas for my daily looks, but now more often than not I just pop on the computer and take a brief jaunt about the blogsphere for said inspiration. I've done this for so long now that there are certain blogs that I immediately go to for the moods I'm most commonly stricken with.

For when I'm feeling girly I often visit the cherry blossom girl for images like this:
For more sweets I check the tea drinking english rose for tasty bits like this:
When I'm feeling particularly like a pin up girl I am sure to see what super kawaii mamma is up to:
For when I'm feeling kick-ass, futuristic, or just plain outrageous I take a peek at Queen Michelle's portion of the kingdom of style:

When I'm feeling like a hipster I check stylesightings for the local hipster wear:

There are many many others that I check on a daily basis, but these are the ones that I can think of that go according to mood.

So, thank you bloggers for feeding my obsession, thank you you for reading my blog, and thank you NYC for being hot and muggy and making me feel lethargic. Time to go get dressed now!
